Gay Men's Book Group-Chicago is a free, open monthly book discussion group welcoming male-identified individuals of all ages who are interested in reading and discussing gay-related literature, both fiction and non-fiction. Books to be discussed are selected by the group and posted on their Facebook page and via their newsletter email.

April's selection is Bath Haus by P.J. Vernon:

Oliver Park, a recovering addict from Indiana, finally has everything he ever wanted: sobriety and a loving, wealthy partner in Nathan, a prominent DC trauma surgeon. Despite their difference in age and disparate backgrounds, they've made a perfect life together. With everything to lose, Oliver shouldn't be visiting Haus, a gay bathhouse. But through the entrance he goes, and it's a line crossed. Inside, he follows a man into a private room, and it's the final line. Whatever happens next, Nathan can never know. But then, everything goes wrong, terribly wrong, and Oliver barely escapes with his life.

He races home in full-blown terror as the hand-shaped bruise grows dark on his neck. The truth will destroy Nathan and everything they have together, so Oliver does the thing he used to do so well: he lies.

What follows is a classic runaway-train narrative, full of the exquisite escalations, edge-of-your-seat thrills, and oh-my-god twists. P. J. Vernon's Bath Haus is a scintillating thriller with an emotional punch, perfect for readers curious for their next must-read novel.

Join us at the Center on Halsted (2nd floor) for a discussion of this thrilling book.

Legendary provocateur Bruce LaBruce reimagines Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1968 film Teorema for our modern dystopian times. A key figure in both the New Queer Cinema and punk rock’s queercore movements, LaBruce gives us yet another politically radical and sexually transgressive cinematic feast.

A film of art, protest, and raw sexuality, The Visitor reminds us that everything is political – including, and especially, sex. We live in a hypercapitalist world where the rich use the bodies of the poor to metaphorically, yet still physically, gain their pleasure. Here we see the anonymous Visitor, a foreigner from unknown origins, washing up on the shores of England and doing the same to the social elite – but this time literally.

As The Visitor seduces each member of a single family before leaving abruptly to let them deal with the destruction of all known social norms we see LaBruce giving us more of what he is best at – showing us how social relationships (and society itself) is nothing more than a social construct, and that society is nothing more than a collection of individuals – individuals created through sexual desire.

Shocking, cheeky, upsetting, and exciting – we’re incredibly proud and honored to be hosting the Chicago premiere of this film.

Bruce LaBruce, UK, 2024, 101 mins, DCP

Books to be discussed are selected by the group and posted on their Facebook page and via their newsletter email.

May's selection is What Belongs to You by Garth Greenwell:

On an unseasonably warm autumn day, an American teacher enters a public bathroom beneath Sofia’s National Palace of Culture. There he meets Mitko, a charismatic young hustler, and pays him for sex. He returns to Mitko again and again over the next few months, their relationship growing increasingly intimate and unnerving.

As he struggles to reconcile his longing with the anguish it creates, he’s forced to grapple with his own fraught history: his formative experiences of love, his painful rejection by family and friends, and the difficulty of growing up as a gay man in southern America in the 1990s.

Startlingly erotic and immensely powerful, What Belongs to You tells an unforgettable story about the ways our pasts and cultures, our scars and shames can shape who we are and determine how we love.

Join us at the Center on Halsted (2nd floor) for a discussion of this thought-provoking book.

CPT IS BACK IN THE PRIDE PARADE!

There are still many details to work out, but we are excited to have an entry in the 2025 parade.

We have rented a trolley that seats 34, and some are still available. We also can have many walkers on the parade route who can be flag bearers, or carry our vintage banner, or serve as monitors.

We are asking people to to pay $20 to participate as a walker or rider, and will include a new CPT tee shirt. The shirts are 100% cotton and are not pre-shrunk, so increase the size up on from what you would normally wear, for comfort.

Last year some people met at the Open Space Arts location on Wilson and Clark and rode the trolley to the parade location. Others joined the group once the trolley was in the correct position, which last year was Broadway and Sheridan, by Gill Park. Last year, some left the route on Cannon Drive south of Diversey, and others rode the trolley back north to get dropped of at the Wilson Red Line stop, or the Uptown Tap Room for lunch.

If you would like to make an additional donation to help defray the costs, you can do that here.

The PrimeTimers® Worldwide Biennial Convention will be held in Omaha, Nebraska, October 9–13, 2025. The host hotel, Embassy Suites, is just across the street from the Old Market District, which is a hotspot for dining, sightseeing, and nightlife. PTWW has scheduled a plethora of recreational and educational activities throughout the convention.

Visit the official PTWW convention web site to register and pay online or by mail. You must register with PTWW before your hotel room is reserved.

Our very own Frank G. has volunteered to act as the point person for CPT. Please contact Frank if you plan to attend the convention so that he can help attendees get in touch with one another. He will also try to help if you would like to attend but first need to find someone with whom to share transportation or lodging. What a guy!

In addition, you are invited to register on this page simply to make your intention to attend the convention known to other CPT members.
