Gay Men's Book Group-Chicago is a free, open monthly book discussion group welcoming male-identified individuals of all ages who are interested in reading and discussing gay-related literature, both fiction and non-fiction. Books to be discussed are selected by the group and posted on their Facebook page and via their newsletter email.

August's selection is Mothers and Sons by Adam Haslett:

At forty, Peter, an asylum lawyer in New York City, is overworked and isolated. He spends his days immersed in the struggles of his clients only to return to an empty apartment and occasional hook-ups with a man who wants more than Peter can give. But when the asylum case of a young gay man pierces Peter's numbness, the event that he has avoided for twenty years returns to haunt him.

Ann, his mother, who runs a women's retreat center she founded after leaving his father, is wounded by the estrangement from Peter but cherishes the world she has built. She long ago banished from her mind the decision that divided her from her son. But as Peter’s case plunges him further into the memory of his first love and the night of violence that changed his life forever, he and his mother must confront the secret that tore them apart.

With unsurpassed emotional depth, Mothers and Sons reveals all that is lost by looking away from the past and what might be restored by facing it. In his spellbinding new novel, Adam Haslett demonstrates yet again his mastery of “a rich assortment of literary gifts” (New York Times).

Join us at the Center on Halsted (2nd floor) for a discussion of this thought-provoking book.

September's selection is Evenings and Weekends by Oisín McKenna:

London, 2019. It’s the hottest June on record, and a whale is stuck in the Thames River. In the streets of the city, four old acquaintances want more from life than they’ve been given. On the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, their paths will intersect at a party that will change their lives forever…

Maggie, a once-hopeful artist turned waitress, is pregnant and preparing to move back to her hometown with her boyfriend and father-to-be Ed, leaving the city she loves and the life she imagined for herself.

Ed, coasting through life as a barely competent bike courier, is ready for a new start with Maggie and their baby, if only to finally leave behind his secret past of hooking up with strange men in train station bathrooms—and his secret past with Maggie’s best friend, Phil.

Phil, who sleepwalks through his office job and lives for the weekends, is on the brink of achieving his first real relationship with his roommate Keith. The two live in an illegal warehouse commune with other quirky creatives and idealists—the site of the party to end all parties.

As the temperature continues to climb, Maggie, Ed, and Phil will have to confront their shared pasts, current desires, and limits of their future lives together before the weekend is over.

Strikingly heartfelt, sexually charged, and disarmingly comic, Oisín McKenna’s addictive, page-turning debut is a mesmerizing dive into the soul of a city and a critical look at the political, emotional, and financial hurdles facing young adults trying to build lives there and often living for their evenings and weekends.

Join us at the Center on Halsted (2nd floor) for a discussion of this compelling book.

Open Space Arts Presents the American Premiere of the London Pub-Theatre Hit GANGSTA BABY in September-October 2025

Open Space Arts is thrilled to co-produce the American premiere of GANGSTA BABY, a powerful,  semi-autobiographical drama from London. Directed by the renowned UK artist Rikki Beadle-Blair (MBE), GANGSTA BABY will run at Open Space Arts from September 19 to October 5, 2025, in our intimate 25-seat theatre at 1411 W. Wilson Avenue.

Written and performed by Cameron Raasdal-Munro, GANGSTA BABY tells the gripping story of Junior, a young gay sex worker living in the working-class city of Hastings, UK, and his complex relationship with his homophobic gangster father. The play explores urgent and often overlooked issues such as sex work, addiction, classism, and internalized homophobia, all through the lens of queer identity and masculinity.

After a successful run at London’s Hope Theatre, GANGSTA BABY won numerous accolades, including "Fringe Show of the Year" and "Best Male Performer of the Year" for Raasdal-Munro’s powerful portrayal of Junior. Critics have praised the play for its raw honesty and its unflinching exploration of life on the margins, particularly for queer individuals in working-class environments.

This American premiere, featuring a Chicago-based cast alongside Raasdal-Munro, will bring this hard-hitting, socially important piece of theatre to a new audience. Co-producer G. Riley Mills said, “Chicago’s stages have long been home to fearless storytelling, making it the ideal home for a narrative that pushes boundaries and challenges societal norms. We’re honored to bring GANGSTA BABY to a city that values bravery and creativity.”

Tickets are $30 general admission, or $25 for students and seniors.

Please Note: Your ticket is not confirmed until you have completed a purchase directly from the theater. https://www.goelevent.com/OpenSpaceArts/e/GANGSTA-BABY

Reeling 2025, the 43rd annual Chicago LGBTQ+ International Film Festival, presents Perro Perro at Landmark’s Century Centre Cinema, theater 4.

Director Marco Berger (THE ASTRONAUT LOVERS) is back with another provocative, whimsical exploration of flirtatious desire and the dangers of getting too attached – a surreal tale that positions some men as literal dogs. Like last year’s festival hit, this film is filled with heady conversations that ask questions about sexuality and exploration through the unique framing device of a man’s attraction to another man who behaves like a stray dog left behind on vacation. Juan takes in his new, wayward companion, feeds him, bathes him, and eventually allows him in the house and into his bed, all to the chagrin of his partner, who warns that he is getting too attached. As Juan falls in love, his fellow vacationers push back and encourage him to think rationally, challenging his assertions that this stray can become a part of the group.

Join CPT for a Special Film Night at Facets!

Don’t miss the Chicago premiere of Unspoken, a powerful new gay film presented by the Queer Expression Film Fest sponsored by Open Space Arts. After the screening, stay for a lively discussion and social gathering in the Facets lounge.

Unspoken follows Noam, a closeted teenager in a deeply religious community who stumbles upon a hidden love letter written to his grandfather—by another man, before the Holocaust. Driven by curiosity and longing, Noam sets out to uncover the truth about his grandfather’s past and, ultimately, his own identity.

In an era marked by rising antisemitism and Holocaust denial, Unspoken resonates deeply. This moving coming-of-age story features strong performances, thoughtful writing, and emotional twists that make it both timely and timeless.

    Location:
Facets, 1517 W. Fullerton (just west of DePaul)
Accessible by the Fullerton Red/Brown/Purple Line stop, or the Ashland and Fullerton buses. Street parking is usually available.

    Extras:
Enjoy cocktails and classic movie snacks before the screening and during the post-film conversation.

    Note:
These exclusive Queer Expression selections are not available on streaming platforms. Past premieres—like Sebastian, Queen Tut, Horseplay, and Eismayer—only became available to stream well after their in-person debuts.

    https://www.goelevent.com/OpenSpaceArts/e/UNSPOKEN

Your reservation is only confirmed once you purchase tickets directly from Open Space Arts. Tickets are not available through Facets. A limited number of tickets may be available at the door on the night of the screening, but advance purchase is strongly recommended.

The PrimeTimers® Worldwide Biennial Convention will be held in Omaha, Nebraska, October 9–13, 2025. The host hotel, Embassy Suites, is just across the street from the Old Market District, which is a hotspot for dining, sightseeing, and nightlife. PTWW has scheduled a plethora of recreational and educational activities throughout the convention.

Visit the official PTWW convention web site to register and pay online or by mail. You must register with PTWW before your hotel room is reserved.

Our very own Frank G. has volunteered to act as the point person for CPT. Please contact Frank if you plan to attend the convention so that he can help attendees get in touch with one another. He will also try to help if you would like to attend but first need to find someone with whom to share transportation or lodging. What a guy!

In addition, you are invited to register on this page simply to make your intention to attend the convention known to other CPT members.
